Dog friendly beaches in North Devon

You’ll find some of the UK’s most beautiful dog friendly beaches in North Devon, with miles of golden sand most of which welcome four-legged pooches all year round.

Is Woolacombe Beach dog friendly all year? Although certain zones are restricted during the peak summer months, the answer is yes! Within easy walking distance of No. 9 Putsborough, the award-winning Woolacombe Beach stretches for three miles — plenty of space for endless games of fetch and sandy paw prints in every season. The neighbouring dog friendly beaches of Putsborough, Barricane and Combesgate are also just a stroll away, making this area a paradise for beach-loving pups.

When you’re ready for a pit stop, there are some brilliant dog friendly cafes in Woolacombe, including The Porthole Woolacombe,, perched above the dunes (their orange cinnamon buns are heavenly!), and the laid-back Beach House Woolacombe, where both humans and hounds can relax by the sea.

Dog friendly beaches in North Devon include another must-visit, Saunton Sands, a vast four-mile stretch that welcomes dogs all year round. There’s a handy zoning system – keep pups on a lead for the first few minutes, then enjoy over three miles of free-run space and shallow waves perfect for a doggy paddle

For something more peaceful (and a bit of a hidden gem, shhh!), head to Crow Point one of North Devon’s secret beaches on the edge of Braunton Burrows, part of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. With stunning views, soft sand and crystal-clear water, it’s wonderfully dog friendly all year round and ideal for reactive dogs who prefer quieter surroundings. Before your walk, grab a coffee from the dog friendly The Quay Cafe to make it the perfect outing.

Walk from Woolacombe to Potters Hill

Grab the lead and head out on one of the most scenic dog friendly walks in North Devon — the Woolacombe to Potters Hill circular trail, right on the doorstep of No. 9 Putsborough.

This gentle but rewarding South West Coast Path route offers breathtaking views of Baggy Point, Woolacombe Bay and the rolling hills beyond. Expect a mix of coastal flora and fauna, open grassy slopes, and if you’re lucky, a glimpse of the wild Exmoor ponies grazing along the way.

Start at the Marine Drive car park hut (grid ref SS458433) and head up the grassy bank through a field gate. Follow the public footpath uphill as it winds around Potters Hill, then bear left at the first waymark. Continue straight on at the next signpost to reach Woolacombe Down, where a bench offers spectacular views across to Baggy Point and Hartland — perfect for a breather (and maybe a treat or two for your pup!).

Carry on along the track until you pass through another field gate, then head downhill. Take the waymarked path to the right, signed to Marine Drive. When you reach Marine Drive, turn left for around 20 metres before joining the sandy footpath that leads into the Woolacombe dunes.

Follow the South West Coast Path signs to the right — where the path forks, take the right-hand route through the dunes and back to your starting point. It’s a peaceful loop full of wide-open skies, sea air and wagging tails.
