Spring activities and Easter breaks in Devon; hop to it!

As the wild countryside starts to bloom, the temperatures rise and the wildlife starts to wake up, Easter is the perfect time to arrange a getaway to Woolacombe and North Devon.  Whether you’re met with balmy sunshine or April showers, extended days means there’s plenty to explore and keep your interest this springtime and Easter holiday….

Easter Egg Hunts

Best for: Wholesome family fun!

No Easter holiday is complete without an Easter egg hunt, right? So, a trip to Marwood Hill Gardens should be at the top of your holiday list. Come and find the hidden eggs in these magical and glorious lakeside gardens.  When you’ve found all the eggs, be sure to collect your prize from the tearoom from the Easter Bunny!

If you fancy a trail nearer to your home from home pick up a trail map from Woolacombe Tourist Information Centre along Woolacombe’s Esplanade and head out to find 10 clues hidden around the breath-taking Woolacombe sand dunes above the beach. Complete this nature-inspired activity and claim a yummy prize!

Tidal Pools

Best for: A dip with a difference

Dotted in secret locations across the coastline, spend an afternoon bobbing in the relaxed waters of a tidal pool, watching the waves roll in from a distance, before drying yourself down and heading to a coffee house for a warm drink & pastry – the ultimate way to end your day by the sea. So grab your wetsuits (the sea water is still a little cool!) and take a splash – our favourite tidal pools are Tunnels Beaches, Westward Ho! Open Sea Water Pool, or the perfectly hidden gem of Mermaid’s Lido .  Free to enjoy and no need to book, just turn up when the mood and the weather strikes!

Sea Safaris

Best for: Little Pirates

If your little pirates love all things nautical, enjoy a  sea safari for a swashbuckling adventure this Easter. See smugglers caves, treacherous coastline where many a ship has been wrecked, waterfalls or keep your eyes peeled for seals, dolphins and porpoise if wildlife is more your thing.

Clovelly

Best for: Stepping back in time

The Hartland Peninsula is picture-postcard pretty, and Clovelly Village is no exception. Steep sided valleys cradle the tiny fishing village and its stunning cove, while scenic walks along the shore allow visitors a wild sense of escape – see if you can find the secret waterfall!

Clovelly has changed little over the centuries and there’s much to be discovered as you navigate the cobbled path down to the harbour. For Easter, every child visiting Clovelly will receive a special village map upon entry, inviting them on an exciting Easter adventure!

Watermouth Castle Easter Fun

Best for: An enchanting experience

Does your little princess or knight love to imagine they have their own castle? Take them to Watermouth Castle  and let their imaginations run wild as they dream up fanciful tales – did you know this Victorian castle turned tourist attraction is thought to have been a smugglers haven? Discover spiralling stone staircases, the dungeon labyrinths, historic castle treasures, magical gardens, the water extravaganza show and more!

Spring Cycles

Best for: Fresh air fun

Nothing beats covering ground on an e-bike as you enjoy the daffodils and fresh salty breeze along the famous Tarka Trail. Running from Braunton to Mid-Devon this former railway track is family friendly due to its flat terrain on traffic free lanes and meanders through beautiful countryside, coastal inlets and pretty villages.

Hire e-bikes from Waterside Bike Hire at Chivenor and it takes 1 hour each way to Instow; if you fancy a shorter route, hire bikes from Fremington Bike Hire and it is 15 minutes each way to Instow.  Instow is a very pretty estuary village with excellent pubs and cafes  and in the summer months you can catch the ‘ferry’ across to the equally charming village of Appledore.  Be sure to include a pitstop for a drink and a slice of cake!
